Grades 9–12. Students model how changing conditions can result in a new ecosystem and how, in some cases, these changes follow a general pattern called succession. Students develop model ecosystems using a hay infusion, protist cultures, and algae cultures. Then students collect evidence using the models to construct an explanation for the changes that occur in biotic and abiotic factors within their ecosystems.
Gather evidence, over time, to argue patterns in the relationships among populations within a hay infusion

Grades 9–12. Students explore the driving question of how biological communities in a model pond ecosystem change over time and how these changes follow a general pattern called succession. During the experiment, students set up a mini pond using a hay infusion, protist cultures, and algae cultures to model the pond ecosystem. Student groups make observations and take samples of assigned portions of the pond, collecting evidence about changes in the abiotic and biotic factors. They also create microscale pond models from test tubes—a control microscale pond, which mimics the features of the larger class pond, and a microscale pond with change to one or more parameters—to determine how it would impact the ecosystem. Student observations and data collection take place over the course of 4–6 weeks. Kit helps address Next Generation Science Standard* HS-LS2-6. Accommodates up to 8 groups of students. Includes FREE 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS.
Note: Kit includes a prepaid coupon to request perishable materials later at your convenience. Contact us or return the coupon at least 2 weeks prior to requested delivery date to ensure prompt arrival of materials.
