Teach your students about proteins with this simple classroom exercise. Students isolate the green fluorescent protein (GFP) and learn about recombinant proteins and genetic engineering along the way. The activity culminates with students creating glowing necklaces using their isolated GFP.
Use a simple purification process to isolate green fluorescent protein while developing a model for how genetic engineering is used to make recombinant proteins.

Illuminate the dark corners of your students' curiosity by teaching them about proteins. This simple classroom exercise enables students to isolate the green fluorescent protein (GFP) found in jellyfish, while teaching them about recombinant proteins and genetic engineering. After students isolate the GFP, they expose their samples to ultraviolet (UV) or blue LED light and watch them glow. Students then create necklaces with their glowing GFP and wear them proudly. With this beginner's activity, you can show your students that protein science can be approachable and engaging, but not overwhelming. Kit materials equip 32 students and include teacher's manual, student guide, and digital resources. Note: Kit also includes perishable materials.
